I swear some of yall just dont appreciate some of the creative process behind music videos. While Many music videos give us the normal party, story narrative and film dslr looks whenever i see an animated music video its interesting to see how its approached. Lina Tullgreen (feat. NTHNL – Always Fine was an interesting video. Im not sure if i was hypnotized by the very stylish designs or the vibrant high contrast hue colors but Director and animator Shane Beam created something very euphoric and poetic to represent Lina Tullgreen – Always fine.
The collaboration, their process and its impending products occurred serendipitously and without much discussion. They had met at a show, and through the mysterious graces of the internet started work on “Always Fine.” NTHNL created the sonic structures with few basic song parameters, and Tullgren wrote the lyrics and melody based on a feeling of being at a party alone, where something feels wrong.
The feeling cannot be placed: you cannot locate the source, but live inside the overarching surface feeling. It was with these same lyrical ideas that Lina and NTHNL approached Shane Beam to create an animated video to accompany the track.
After watching the video i was immediately brought a flashback of michel goundry interpretations of how he decided visuals assign to certain sounds in a tracks and how what seems like chaos is layered in different visuals to accompany the sound or reflect it contrast to another * For those who own the criterion dvd michel groundry set please link me to it hours of searching on youtube yield me at best with this example, the one i was looking for was the daft punk illustration graph to keynote each sound and how it was storyboarded * sigh, anyways.
This made sense since Michel works includes animation as well, now back to Always Fine.
one of the beautiful things about this video how quickly Director/Animator Shane Beam been able to captured is the isolation and depth of the vocals and yet create various landscapes to help the compositions of the sounds carry the chorus flow organically trough his animation. While Shane is no stranger to music videos varisty music video. In Always fine it seems more of a sound design approach which helps create its own narrative in sometimes abstract landscapes that help illustrate the soundscape of the song and while reflecting its mood in color and symbolism.
Such gorgeous animation for such an amazing song by Lina Tullgren. Such amazing vocals and sounds, be sure to check out bandcamp and for any upcoming shows.
